Cancer Rehabilitation

There are now more than 12 million cancer survivors in the United States.

Occupational and physical therapy can help reduce the long and short-term effects of cancer treatments. Side effects often include fatigue, pain, peripheral neuropathy, balance and gait problems, upper or lower quadrant mobility issues, or loss of ability to perform daily functional activities. Studies show that people with cancer who participate in therapy programs show significant improvements in health-related quality of life, improved physical functioning, reduced cancer-related fatigue, and reduced side effects from cancer and its treatments.

Why therapy for cancer rehab?

  • A Mayo Clinic study demonstrated that 66% of cancer patients reported functional impairment, but only two patients received the appropriate referrals for occupational or physical therapy.
  • Women with breast cancer who exercise are more likely to survive longer after a cancer diagnosis, have a lower risk of recurrence, and have reduced all-cause mortality rates.
  • In 2009, the CDC recommended exercise to fight side effects of cancer and even to prevent return episodes of cancer.
